In the past week we've gotten a bit more information on just how Tesla Motors plans on fulfilling its ambitious goal of ramping up production to meet demand for it's Model 3 sedan.  First off the company has announced that a total of 373,000 pre-orders have been placed.   The company plans to boost the current production rate of 50,000 autos a year to an impressive 500,000 annually by 2018.  Raising funds to build out its production capability is a major part of that plan and the company has announced it will issue $1.4 billion in new Tesla shares to fund this expansion.  The company has also been making some new hires including Audi’s Peter Hochholdinger, who will join the company's vehicle production division and help streamline and improve production to meet the lofty targets.  Finally, if you haven't placed a deposit for a Model 3 yet and you're looking for a new job, one employer is offering new hires a Model 3 as part of their compensation for coming aboard.  North Carolina based Practichem, a maker of scientific instruments is trying to inspire and entice highly sought after technical workers to its company and thinks having a Model 3 as a perk of working there will inspire his employees to do similarly groundbreaking and inspirational work while at the company.  What do you think...should more employers offer Tesla Model 3's as incentive to join their companies?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Welcome Ed! I also have a deposit down.  For now we wait and follow the Model 3's ongoing development.  I'm sure we'll all be getting updates from Tesla Motors throughout the process.

Hi all.  I'm Ed to my friends and live in Abbotsford, BC.  I've put my $1000 down and want to know what happens next?

A series of new pictures of the Tesla Model 3 over at Motor Trend gives us one of the first really good shots of the car's enormous dash/roof glass that extends the full length of the cabin. As can be seen above all 5 passenger seats will have full view of the sky above but what's not entirely clear is how a bright sunny day might affect passengers.  While a gradated tinting is expected as exists on the Models S and X, we're curious if the openness could be 'too much' on those bright days and if there might be the possibility of adjusting the tint if necessary.  We're confident Tesla has thought this through and it won't be an issue.  Some other great shots in the Motor Trend article include a family shot with the Models S, X and 3 all together, as well as a number of detail shots of the Model 3 and a video.  Make sure to check out the full article at the link below and then come back and discuss right here in the comments!

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk gave an update on the Model 3 during yesterday's earnings call of the company and he had some surprises in store.  With 400,000 pre-orders and counting for the Model 3 the company had originally planned on moving production volume from the roughly 50,000 per year today for the Models S and X to 500,000 by 2020.  With so many pre-orders for the Model 3 however he is pushing the company's schedule to the limit and his new goal is to pump  out 100,000 vehicles by the end of next year, 2017 and 500,000 per year by 2018...two full years faster than his previous benchmark.  He views this challenge as so important that he's moved his desk to be positioned at the end of the assembly line at the factory at Fremont, California and even has a sleeping bag stashed on the premises for those late night sessions he might have to pull to problem solve.

This is an extraordinarily aggressive goal and will force the company to deal with the myriad of problems that all large automakers face such as supply line and component availability issues plus some new ones, such as the need to finish Tesla's Gigafactory which will be supplying the batteries for all those vehicles.  In addition the company will need cash...it's still to be seen how they go about that, although it shouldn't be hard to convince investors or lenders now that he's got a 400,000 car line of waiting orders.  It is Elon Musk's stated goal to change the world and make EV's (electric vehicles) the norm rather than the exception.  Can he do it?  It seems we'll be finding out sooner than later but it would be hard to bet against the man that has been called the real-world inspiration for the 'Iron Man' movies.

While the base model 3 will start at $35,000 before incentives there will surely be a host of options available for the powertrain, interior and exterior options.  What is the maximum you expect to spend to get the Model 3 that you want and what options would you most likely be willing to pay for?  Larger battery?  Leather seats?  All wheel power? High End Stereo?  Let us know your thoughts and please vote in our poll!

Agreed.   I've seen that pic before. Could very well by the Y with one of the doors open.  It seems they've been having some issues with the X's falcon wing doors.  Hopefully they'll have it all mastered by the time the Y rolls around.

I've heard that Tesla is working on another model being called the Model Y and that it's a smaller SUV or crossover vehicle built on the Tesla Model 3 platform.   Is there anymore info out there about this?  Any ideas on price or when they will announce it?

I think it's just rumor, but maybe not :)

In October, Musk tweeted that the Model 3 would go into production in 2017. But he also posted a tweet confirming that the company was planning to roll out another vehicle called the Model Y, meaning Tesla's lineup would eventually spell-out "S3XY". Musk later deleted that tweet, which effectively drummed up publicity, even though JB Straubel, Tesla's CTO, also teased in June 2014 that a crossover vehicle was coming.
There is not much known about the Model Y. It could have Falcon Wing doors, like the Model X. When Musk tweeted about the Model Y in October, for instance, he said that either the Model 3 or the Model Y would have Falcon doors.

On the introduction of the Model 3 Elon Musk announced that their newest model would go from 0-60mph in less than six seconds.  The room breathed a collective sigh of relief when this was announced because up til that point it was unclear if the company would be able to achieve the kind of performance we've come to expect from Tesla automobiles at the new low 35k price point.  The Tesla S and X afterall feature a 'Ludicrous Mode' option which sees these higher priced models take off like a rocket ship with whiplash inducing speed and times as low as 2.6 seconds (the P90D) for 0-60.   Obviously then one of the questions future Tesla Model 3 buyers have had is whether the company's new baby would also feature 'Ludicrous Mode'.  Well, your prayers have been answered because in a tweet this past weekend none other than the boss himself, Elon Musk stated that the Model 3 will in effect offer Ludicrous Mode as an option.   No word on if the 0-60 time will match the blazing speeds of its higher priced siblings but we can be assured of some pretty impressive scores considering the base model is already fast.

That's an interesting photoshop they did of a Tesla pickup.  Personally, I don't think the Y is a pickup.  I think it's more a crossover/wagon type of vehicle...a smaller version of the X built on the 3 platform.  That isn't to say we won't see some kind of Tesla pickup at some point.  There's a big market for the F150 type trucks, especially in the midwest and south.  But I don't think they'll do a truck until they have all the cars introduced.  Elon is on record saying they'll also have a vehicle even less expensive than the Model 3 eventually.  I think the 3 will be their mid-range and we'll eventually see an even cheaper $20k priced Honda Civic competitor. But that'll be a few years.  Their production capacity is tapped out with 400,000 Model 3 orders waiting to be manufactured.
