Model 3 Purchase and Lease Boards / Re: Putting deposit on Tesla 3
« Last post by Tonyride on March 27, 2016, 08:38:59 AM »
So I've heard that Tesla will start taking deposits, somewhere around $5000 beginning in March of 2016.  Has anyone here done this with a Model X or Model S and can explain how it works?  Do you lose the deposit if you don't follow through with buying the car?  Are you allowed to resell a Tesla just like any other car or are there constraints or issues because of the battery tech or warranty?  Do they offer financing or do you need to get that independently?
I'm sure by new everyone knows what the deposit amount is. I plan to put the $1000 deposit down either on the 31st at a store or online later that day depending on how crazy busy the store is. Who else plan to put a deposit down the first day?

Model 3 Purchase and Lease Boards / Tesla 3 Real Price
« Last post by TeslaGuy on November 27, 2015, 02:02:08 AM »
$35,000 is the price point that is being mentioned by Elon Musk and Tesla for the Model 3.  But is this an out the door price or a stripped down bare model that will then need an additional $10k or more to be a well fitted car?  Also, is this before or after incentives and will those incentives such as the tax credit still apply to the Tesla 3 the same way they do to the Model S and X?

Model 3 Performance / Tesla 3 expected range
« Last post by TeslaGuy on November 27, 2015, 02:00:13 AM »
So I heard that the Tesla 3 will have 200+ mileage range.  I believe this is a bit under what the Model S is capable of.  How will this feel in a real world situation for most drivers.  It seems most gasoline cars get more than 200 miles per tank.  I'm wondering if this might turn off some buyers.  When they say 200+ miles are we talking 210 or 270?

JB Straubel, Tesla Motors design chief gave an hour long talk at the University of Nevada in which he discusses some of the aspects of the upcoming Model 3 electric car by the company.  He touches on the company's new gigafactory being built in northern Nevada and talks about what Tesla has been able to accomplish so far and where the company intends to go.   He also discusses his company's thoughts on education and technology and how the current pursuit of sustainable energy will shape the careers and opportunities of the future.  It's a great video to watch to understand how the company thinks and where it will take us.

What do you do if you're sitting in a hotel lobby and happen to overhear the Tesla design chief on the phone next to you?  You ask as many questions about the upcoming Tesla 3 that he'll permit you to ask of course!  And that's just what Daniel hoffman, a regular reader of CleanTechnica did when he found himself in that very situation.  Daniel could only get a few quick answers out of Bernhard Lee, Tesla's design chief and he was expectedly very tight-lipped but here's how the conversation supposedly went down according to Daniel:

I also asked him if it will be a shrunken Model S, and he said it will be similar, BUT it will have very special design. I also asked if there will be any delay, and he said very firmly “no”. I also asked if the March showcasing is on, and it is (he was surprised I knew the month). Unfortunately he seemed very busy, so I couldn’t annoy him any longer. But it seems that they are not trying to make a cheap design for their “cheap” model. I’m really happy about that, because if I wouldn’t buy a Model S, then the Model 3 is an obvious choice.

And there you have it.  So if the Tesla 3 will have a similar design theme to the Tesla S but with some 'special design' touches, the above and below renderings by Designrm seem spot on or at least close to what we could expect...which isn't a bad thing for the $35,000 Model 3 due to be shown to the public this coming march and available for purchase in 2017.  Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Tesla Chief Technology Officer JB Straubel has revealed that the Model 3 platform will employ both new battery and engine technology so far not seen in Tesla's Model S and X platforums.  In Straubel's words, Tesla will be "inventing a whole new platform" for the Model 3. It will also have "a new battery architecture, it's a new motor technology - brand new vehicle structure...so it's a lot of work. This is something we started on even a few years ago. But it is a brand new vehicle - and it has to be."

The reason for so much new innovation appears to be driven by the target price of $35,000, before incentives, for the Model 3 price.  Such an aggressive goal requires virtually every system to be rethought compared to the pricier Model S and Model X.  The Model 3 is meant to be a mass produced model with much higher volume production than its more pricey siblings and target such benchmark sedans as the BMW 3 Series.
